The Grose Valley in the Blue Mountains is one Australia’s most photogenic locations and has a long history of photographic and art representations. Andrew Merry lived in Blackheath which is perched on the edge of the valley while doing this series. The series appropriates pictorial and romantic art movements and their obsession with capturing ‘the sublime’. The series both embraces and parodies these art clichés. The series title is a tautology and refers to contemporary culture’s fixation with the ‘extreme’ especially in sport and outdoor adventure. An image from this series is on permanent exhibition at the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre, Govetts Leap Road, Blackheath.
